International Women’s Day 2017

Rivers LPC hosted a screening of the film Girl Rising in celebration of International Women’s Day 2017 (March 8). The screening took place at the Civic Hall, Crawley.

Watch the Film trailer:

Girl Rising features the real life stories of 9 girls from Haiti, Nepal, Ethiopia, India, Egypt, Peru, Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. The main focus of the film is about educating girls and the impact it has, not only in combating poverty, but also in inspiring and motivating other girls and women in creating a better life for themselves, their family and their peers through the path of education.

Quotes from our audience members after having watched the film:

“I felt so inspired after having watched the film, and in particular the story of Suma in Nepal. Because despite the hardships she faced, she rose against it and went against the grain. As “freeing herself was not enough” so she continued to help other girl’s in similar situations to her own”.

“The stories I felt resonated with me the most were of Yasmin (Egypt) and Amina (Afghanistan). Both these young girls showed tremendous strength and courage in overcoming difficult situations they found themselves in, and their courage and determination to progress despite the difficult circumstances, was really remarkable”.

“I had heard about this film, but never had the chance to watch it. But I’m glad I came for the screening today! I really liked the way the girls themselves spoke of their stories as this made each story really engaging to watch and listen to. I will definitely share their stories with my friends and family and ask them to also watch the film”.

Thank you to all those who supported and attended the event. We look forward to hosting another event for International Women’s Day in 2018.
